Melaena Cadiz

We met Melaena several months ago when she was beginning her cross-country tour with her talented husband and photographer, Mikael Kennedy. After seeing her play late one night at the Stone Fox here in Nashville, I was completely taken by her beautiful, soulful voice and natural warmth. Her two records, Deep Below Heaven and Rattle The Windows, have become studio favorites, and we love to listen to her early in the morning while it's still quiet and cool out.  I have to recommend two of my absolute favorite songs - Cold Cold River and Neon Drag. Thank you so much, Melaena, for being a part of our new series!

City: Brooklyn, NY

Occupation: Singer/Songwriter

Free time: Playing music and writing with friends. Getting out of town and exploring.

Dream: To have a family and continue building a home with my husband Mikael, eventually a sweet and peaceful place out in the country. To always be playing and writing music, getting to tour, and then hunkering down to create new work. It’s a cycle that really inspires me.

Weekend Plans: It’s our one year wedding anniversary, so we’re going to the Berkshires for the weekend to the same town where we got hitched.

Tunes: Right now, I’m going through a serious ‘80s and ‘90s country phase — George Strait, Keith Whitley, Sammy Kershaw.

Reads: My friend just lent me Virginia Woolf’s “Mrs. Dalloway,” which I fell in love with. The way she describes characters and weaves in and out of each of their minds throughout the book is magical. Now I’m reading the waves.

Eats: Watermelon! All summer long.

ES Favorites: The Georgia Midi I wore to every show on my last tour and then to a friend’s wedding a few weeks ago. It’s so simple and elegant. Also, the Raw Silk Marlena Dress — I love the feel of it. It’s so light and airy in this hot, humid weather.
