A short based on one of our most popular, practical pant styles - the Clyde. I am decidedly not a shorts person - but dressing comfortably for warm climates almost always requires some kind of alternative to pants, and I wanted to tackle the challenge.

The silhouette I'm most drawn to is that of the 1930s and 1940s tap shorts with a narrow waist and wide, full thigh opening. I aimed to follow the rule of thirds, with the distance from natural waist to hem of the shorts taking up about one-third of total leg length. The hem hits right around mid-thigh, which feels comfortable in terms of coverage but still keeps most of your legs out in the open air. A generous inseam makes them practical and wearable (everybody knows that a one or two-inch inseam on shorts is a recipe for discomfort).

These are incredibly versatile with our classic Clyde pockets and durable topstitching. Distinctly utilitarian in feel, I picture these being right at home on an archaeological dig but also very wearable for a weekend brunch and trip to the park.

  • Material & Care

    Fabric: Midweight Linen

    Fiber Content: 100% Linen

Description: Medium weight, sturdy broadcloth linen that can be pressed to a neat, crisp finish or left wrinkled after washing for a perfectly lived-in look. Linen possesses natural strength and durability, and it's a super friendly fiber on the environment. It requires very little processing and is virtually lint-free, hypoallergenic, comfortable in all seasons, insulating, and absorbent.

Care: Machine washable. Wash on gentle cycle with cold water. Tumble dry warm. Leave unpressed for a beautifully rumpled look (as pictured here), or press on medium heat with steam to remove wrinkles.

*Linen is a natural fiber and will fade and wear over time, which we love. If you prefer your garments to not show as much wear, hand wash, and do not tumble dry.

*Garment measurements were taken flat, so double where necessary. All measurements are approximate, +/- a tolerance that is to be expected with handmade clothing.

Select your size with your hip measurement in mind as you want to make sure you'll be able to pull them up. On some bodies, you'll need to shimmy a bit to get them over your hips, but once they are on, they should feel great!

Summer staple

These are just great. Summer has only just begun here in New Zealand, and they've already emerged as the season's staple. I find that the linen doesn't crease as much as other linen items I own from elsewhere (perhaps it's the heavier weave?). They are comfortable, and the thick waistband is flattering. For reference, I ordered a size 4 and my measurements are 86-68-91cm. There's a bit of room in them, and I probably could have gone down to a size 2, but I would have lost the effortless look (and the comfort!).

Second pair!

I got the flax Clyde shorts last year and worn them a ton, so I added the black this year. I went down and me size, from my typical 6 to a 4 and they fit great.

Perfect shorts

I was not completely sure of myself when buying this pair, because I hardly ever wear shorts. But recently it's been warmer and warmer in the summers and I was longing for something light but still wearable in a city context. And those are great! It feels compeltely unobstructive, I feel free to move and still be covered just enough. The fabric is beautiful as always with ES, and the lengh is perfect. The pockets are a must, at least to me. I'm used to wearing 28 in jeans and chose a size 6, which is perfect.

Don't last very long

The shorts are functional and good looking. However, I would not recommend them, because they don't last very long. I bought mine in the fall 2017, I started wearing them in 2018(no more than twice a week, so not heavy use) and in June 2019 I noticed holes in the inner inseam (the shorts are very loose, so no rubbing). I bought tens of shorts from different brands and at a much lower price point and this never happened to me after just one season. I understand that there will be eventually some wear but not such a high level of degradation after just one season of moderate use. I think it is an issue of quality of stitching.

We're sorry to hear that your Clyde Work Short wore down in the inner thigh and appreciate you sharing this feedback, Petra! As is the nature of natural fibers, our fabrics are meant to break down over time to avoid leaving a permanent mark on the earth. That means that over time, it’s normal for garments to develop holes or thin out! To prolong the life of a garment, we recommend washing your ES pieces after every 3-4 wears to remove any dirt or oils naturally found on our skin. We're also happy to repair your garment or send out swatches so you can repair it locally! Just email our Customer Relations Team at, and we'll take care of everything. :)
