  • Description

Our current Cotton Canvas styles are being discontinued. We are releasing a new, 100% recycled Cotton Canvas this spring, which means it’s time to say goodbye to our current canvas material. Discontinuations at ES are always bittersweet, but we have been working on developing this fully post-consumer material for over a year and are so excited to share it with you! Learn more about this discontinuation and our new Cotton Canvas here.

In the meantime, our current Cotton Canvas styles (except new Belts) are now marked down 20% so we can clear out our existing fabric inventory. We’ll run this discontinuation until March 1 or until we run out of fabric, whichever comes first.

    ・・・・・

The newest version of our Clyde Trench. This silhouette was developed by combining our essential Clyde pocket and the excellent fit of our Annie Shirt Dress from SS16 to create a classic trench. With added swing and a large shawl collar, it has a deliciously nostalgic shape while still feeling ultra-modern. Its massive pockets carry anything you need.

I imagine a young Annie Hall type wearing this with slim trousers, an oversized button-down, and oxfords on a brisk afternoon walk to the city library. Wear with the collar folded down for a sleek look or full for a structural shape.

We have so many great iterations in this series! Shop all of our Clyde Outerwear styles!

  • Material & Care

    Fabric: Cotton Canvas

    Fiber Content: 100% Cotton

Description: Heavyweight, workhorse fabric with a distinctly architectural feel. The weave is one of the most durable - resisting pilling, thinning, and tearing by nature of its very structure. It has sturdy body and weight and will break in and patina beautifully with wear. Looks great pressed crisp or rumpled and worn.

Care: Machine washable. Wash on cold. Tumble dry warm. Press on low with steam to remove wrinkles, or leave unpressed for a perfectly unfussy look. Will break in and soften significantly over time.

*Cotton is a natural fiber and will fade and wear over time, which we love. If you prefer your garments to not show much wear, hand wash and do not tumble dry.

  • Sizing & Fit

Intended to have a relaxed, oversized fit. Open front allows for versatility in sizing. Drop sleeves are accommodating and slightly cropped to allow for layering and to avoid visual bulk. Size down for a slimmer look.

The generous 3" sleeve and bottom hem also allow for easy length adjustments by a tailor.

Love this trench!

So stylist and easy! I will say, the denim is very hard so I think I’ll love it most after some wear and tear to soften it up some.

50/50

I have lusted after the silhouette of this trench for several years before finally having saved up enough to purchase. I would super have loved to give this 5-stars but in considering the ES aim of this being a lifetime, closet-workhorse type of piece, I just cannot and hope this honest assessment is helpful to others who are in "on-a-budget-but-still-trying-to-buy-fewer,better" mode like myself..

I purchased this trench because I work indoors in a museum archive environment that is kept pretty chilly, so thought that this would be a good alternative to a blazer (which is too dressy for our laid back atmosphere in the lab). I loved the idea of it being canvas and therefore also offering some protection from the chemicals we occasionally come into contact with with the flexibility to hide my paint-covered self when I have to run to a meeting.

Feedback:

1. I sized down because I was worried about bulk (which turned out to be a very founded fear). There is a lot of fabric on this gal. So much so that it kind of... gets in the way when doing desk tasks. While running errands, etc this is a non-issue but as a blazer alternative - it becomes a nuisance quickly.

2. These pockets seemed like they would be super functional and are a primary reason I chose this over, say, the Harper. I snagged a secondhand Clyde jumpsuit earlier this year and adore how the deep, juicy pockets let me store everything from extra socks to my DSLR camera in their sweet, sweet depths but I have found…

It's love

I love the silhouette of the Clyde Trench. It's a sturdy, versatile, classic piece that wears well, dresses up or down, and makes me feel like a superstar. I bought it in 'clay' and am pleased with how well the color coordinates with my closet. I particularly love it paired with black and ivory. The pockets are everything! I put my groceries in these pockets, seriously. Regarding fit, I have the XS in the linen Clyde jacket and it's huge so I sized down to the XXS in the canvas trench and am glad that I did. What I wish was a little different: I would prefer a slightly longer sleeve. I was very surprised by the mega-cropped sleeve length but will admit that it's starting to grow on me. Also, I've worn it daily for about 6 weeks now and have already washed it twice. I'm surprised that the color is already fading ever-so-slightly along the edges of the collar. Maybe it's just this colorway (I have Flos in the natural cotton canvas that have been washed a zillion times and show no fading or wear at all!). All in all, I'm very pleased and will wear this until it falls apart if that day ever comes.

Trench Diaries

I've been eyeing every piece in the Clyde Collection for a while and when we decided to go on our Honeymoon to Scandinavia in October I decided it was time for the trench. I ended up wearing it almost every single day during our trip and now back in San Diego, CA as often as I can.

I was torn between the black and clay colors, but opted for the clay color with the hopes of it being seasonless. The cotton canvas is thick and works really well to block wind and is resistant to stains (don't judge, but I have yet to wash it in the 3 months I've owned it!). The large pockets are just the best thing ever.

I ordered an S, but could have easily gone to an XS. With the S size I can wear a thick sweater underneath and still have plenty of room to move. Being 5'2'', it's a little long, (it hits mid/lower calf) and I may eventually get it hemmed.

I've gotten so many compliments on the this trench and look forward to wearing it for many years to come!

Instant Staple

Love this coat - still a tiny bit large for a very petite human, but that's the style. I receive lots of compliments when wearing, which solidifies that the fit is A-OK!

Love it, wear it over everything

So glad I made this investment! I purchase in autumn, but as the months have gotten colder, I simply layer underneath and it’s easily extended into early winter days.

Architectural Armor

My partner initially took one look at me in this jacket and told me it looked like an artsy canvas shower curtain. It's the most structured and interesting piece of clothing I own, for sure. I'm petite and need to roll the collar to make it look less overwhelming, but the shoulders fit pretty well. It's bold and feels like a security blanket I can wear. I think I'll like it even more as it breaks in and looks more lived-in.

Color, cut, fabric, fit - this jacket is perfect. I got the khaki color and it goes with everything.

Elizabeth Suzann

Thanks for sharing this feedback, Audrey! Since this style is a bit too cropped for you to wear at work, the Petra Tank could be a great alternative! It is designed to hit at the hip, which would give you a little more coverage. :) If you'd like to set up an exchange, just let our Customer Relations Team know by emailing support@elizabethsuzann.com, and we'll take care of it!
