  • Description

A re-imagining of one of our oldest and most treasured styles - the Artist Smock. We changed the sleeves on this from grown-on dolmans to generous raglan style and added a bit of trapeze to the body. The seaming pattern allows us to work with the natural grain-line of the fabric to create an incredibly fluid, sweeping, and becoming garment. It has a lot of volume, but because of the way it's cut, it doesn't overwhelm. The material hangs on the body in luscious folds, and the high boat neck hits right at the collarbone. Roll the sleeves and tuck the front for a very casual, shirting vibe. I love this layered with more gauze and belted for all the drama or worn with your favorite jeans and sneaks for the ultimate hop-around-town situation. If you need to feel on top of the world, feeling this smock sweep behind me in the breeze as I walk through my day does the trick for me.

It hits past the hip at a comfortable, universally wearable length, but does a half-tuck beautifully if you want to pair with high waist trousers.

The Artist also comes in several different fabrics and lengths! See the full series here.

  • Material & Care

    Fabric: Linen Gauze

    Fiber Content: 100% Linen

Description: A gorgeous lightweight linen gauze that has a wonderful texture. The crinkled finish gives the fabric an inherent stretch. It's airy and floaty without being too sheer, hugging the body in slimmer styles and draping beautifully in others. It's lighter than our midweight linen but still strong and durable. It will only soften and improve with age, starting out with a coarser finish but with the ability to become more supple and flexible with wear. We love linen because of the natural strength and durability the fiber possesses, and because it is a very friendly fiber on the environment. It requires very little processing, is virtually lint-free, hypoallergenic, extremely comfortable in all seasons, insulating, and absorbent. This yarn-dyed gauze possesses rustic charm and variation giving it an organic personality.

Care: Hand or machine wash on gentle cycle with cold water. Tumble dry hot. Store folded or flat in order to avoid stretching. If stretching occurs, machine wash and dry to return the fabric to its original shape. The crinkled finish is intentional, so do not press. To remove fold creases or wrinkles, lightly steam or toss in the dryer with a damp towel. Avoid excessive stress on seams.

*Linen is a natural fiber and will fade and wear over time, which we love. If you prefer your garments to not show as much wear, hand wash, and do not tumble dry.

Neckline Issues

I thought OSM would work because it is my preferred size for the Harper tunic. However, the "high boat neck" of this style is cut too small for me. I have to work my head thru the neck hole; if it shrinks in the least, I will not be able to pull it on. And because the fabric is not a knit, where it sits against my neck, above my clavicles, is uncomfortable. Wish it weren't so.

Very cool piece, but has weird sleeves

I love my Artist Smock! The shape is perfect - oversized and breezy with the cool seam down the front and the perfect length for my height. I do think the sleeves are a bit weird though; they bag out above the elbow (excess fabric from the dolman style perhaps?) so they don't always look so flattering from the side. On the fabric: I adore the linen gauze, but it does stretch out a lot! Keep that in mind when trying on your new item - I thought my OS was too small at first but now it has relaxed and fits perfectly.

I’d wear it everyday.

I think, if I could, I would wear a Harper and Flos everyday.

The pocket is perfect for stashing anything - and I mean anything - I even stick my coffee thermos in there when I needed my hands for something! I like the light weight feel and the crinkle effect of the linen gauze. I can get sweaty in it washes up great. I hang it to dry and it dries very quickly compared to the mid-weight linen.

I should be an OSP in the size chart, but that would be much too oversized for my preference in the Harper. In the linen gauze I sized all the way down to OSM and I like the fit. Roomy but not billowing at all. I can still wear a long sleeve tee or turtleneck under it, but it is a closer fit which I like because I can pair it with Flos without feeling too wide everywhere. I think the Harper in mid weight linen might not work the same way in an OSM for me though.

I pack this shirt everywhere I go if I’m not already wearing for travel - again, the pocket!

Love this top!

I have been wearing this top several times a week since it's arrival and am thinking of purchasing a second one in the silk. Even though the temperature has dropped here in the Midwest, the texture of the crinkled linen fabric makes it still appropriate for the Autumn season and should be perfect for the hot and humid summer months because it doesn't cling to the body. I have a very petite bone frame but do not find this top to be overwhelming at all, especially when paired with slim pants/skirts. Another reviewer mentioned the neckline was small for her head to get through -- the neckline is smaller than the other ES pieces I have tried, but I think that is what keeps this design from looking too oversized. If this happens to be an issue for others, a tailor could easily remedy this -- so don't let this put you off from trying this fabulous piece. Bust: 35", waist: 25", hips: 40"

Classic piece for a classic look

This blouse is absolutely fabulous! The linen gauze is a strange texture at first, but it softens over time and keeps you cool. The cut of this shirt is very flattering and you have many options to change things up ie tucked in, sleeves rolled up. You won't be disappointed with this top!

Love this. Wore often in

Love this. Wore often in the summer with white bottoms, but now wearing with denim.

Would love to buy more of your products but got badly hit with customs. I think it might help to clearing mark on parcel that it made in USA with American materials (I think covered under free trade) and to have minimal packaging. Canadian distributor?

Love love love this top.

Love love love this top. My frame can sometimes be overwhelmed by oversized pieces but the cut and weight of the fabric made the top drape really nicely. It makes me feel really elegant and put together although secretly I am super comfortable.
