We're updating our WWC in early 2019! The Josephine style is phasing out entirely. The Josephine Vented Tunic in Midweight Linen will be discontinued at the end of January 2019. We are toying with the idea of developing a slit tunic in collaboration with Alabama Chanin but have no concrete plans yet. This has been a truly beloved piece, but its complex construction, combined with the fact that it's not one of the most popular styles, means it's time to make room for something new.

This piece is an amalgamation of a few different sources of inspiration. The Josephine Tunic was a piece I designed very early on - named after a favorite Wallflowers song, it was a simple cap sleeve tunic that worked with anything. For this collection, I improved the fit of the sleeves and neck, and added volume at the back with a box pleat. The deep slits were inspired by Colette, one of our seamstresses, and a dramatic, full-length, sheer tunic with slits she made for herself years ago. The side vents add the perfect amount of movement and drama to this piece and allow for excellent airflow. This is one of those things that feels so good to move in - you know the kind, garments that give you confidence while you walk and that have presence and drama.

Layer with matching trousers, or over a great pair of jeans. Excellent as a beach coverup, or even over shorts. The side slits allow easy access to pockets, which is key. This piece is one of my favorite marriages of functionality and beautiful form.

Cut from a sturdy, incredibly durable linen that can be pressed to a neat, crisp finish, or left wrinkled after washing for a perfectly lived-in look. It will only soften and improve with age, a beautiful benefit of clothing meant for a life fully-lived.

  • Material & Care

    Midweight Linen

    100% Linen

This is a medium weight, sturdy, structured, incredibly durable broadcloth linen that can be pressed to a neat, crisp finish, or left wrinkled after washing for a perfectly lived-in look. It has luxurious body and weight, and the strength to stand up to years of daily wear. It will only soften and improve with age, starting out with a coarser finish but with the ability to become more supple and flexible with wear. We love linen because of the natural strength and durability the fiber possesses, and because it is a very friendly fiber on the environment. It requires very little processing, is virtually lint free, hypoallergenic, extremely comfortable in all seasons, insulating, and absorbent. It is also one of my favorite fabrics aesthetically - possessing such charm and texture in its variation, with a natural sheen that doesn't feel at all pretentious.

Available in four classic colors - a warm "Ivory," a natural "Flax," a rich "Navy," and a deep "Black."

Hand or machine wash on gentle cycle with cold water. Tumble dry low. Leave unpressed for a beautifully rumpled look (as pictured here), or press on medium heat with steam to remove wrinkles, straighten neckline, sleeves, and hem. Will press to a crisp, smooth finish.

  • Sizing & Fit

Intended to have a relaxed trapeze shape. Slits rise to the natural waistline. Pleat at back adds volume, should fit loosely in the chest, waist, and hip. Hits past the knee.

Available in sizes XXS-XL. See our size chart to determine your size.

A twist on one of our very first styles from 2013 - if you purchased a Josephine tunic way back then, the sizing is very similar but this piece has a bit more volume (and of course those side slits).
