A short based on one of our most popular, practical pant styles: the Clyde. I am decidedly not a shorts person - but dressing comfortably for warm climates almost always requires some kind of alternative to pants, and I wanted to tackle the challenge.

The silhouette I'm most drawn to is that of the 1930s and 1940s tap shorts with a narrow waist and wide, full thigh opening. I aimed to follow the rule of thirds, with the distance from natural waist to hem of the shorts taking up about one-third of total leg length. The hem hits right around mid-thigh, which feels comfortable in terms of coverage but still keeps most of your legs out in the open air. A generous inseam makes them practical and wearable (everybody knows that a one or two-inch inseam on shorts is a recipe for discomfort).

These are incredibly versatile with our classic Clyde pockets and durable topstitching. Distinctly utilitarian in feel, I picture these being right at home on an archaeological dig but also very wearable for a weekend brunch and trip to the park.

Flax
A neutral to end all neutrals. Our Flax Linen is the undyed, natural color of the fiber. The color can vary from the palest beach sand to uncooked oatmeal with flecks of warm spices to a taupe putty with grey undertones. We challenge you to find a pairing color Flax linen doesn’t bring out the best in.

Black
With the natural variations in the weave of true linen, our Black is anything but basic. Unworn, this forever shade holds the saturation of soot and tar. If you wash and tumble dry, over time you’ll see a bit more fading around the seams, giving a lived-in, favorite tee look.

Olive
Like a drizzle of the nicest bottle of olive oil in your pantry, this shade of our Midweight Linen is a Mediterranean-inspired pop of earth. Wash and dry it for years and it will still retain the most beautiful lichen-esque hue. Pairs effortlessly with neutrals like our Flax Midweight Linen.

Navy
Possibly the cooler little sister to Black, our Navy Midweight Linen is a color of substance. It can read almost black in a certain light, but its true essence is an inky midnight blue. It fades over time, wash, and wear like your favorite dark denim, which makes us love it all the more.

Terra
This savory shade of Midweight Linen is spicy chili oil in fabric form. The bold hue remind us of the magical red clay of Oaxaca, Mexico, but there's also a nod to the slightly softer orange shades of mimolette cheese or cantaloupe. For a balanced look, we often pair our Flax Midweight Linen with Terra, but a monochromatic Terra top and bottom is our idea of a modern power suit.

Ivory
Our not-too-white white Midweight Linen. A shade of white that won't blind you, nor does it get dingy looking after wear or wash. The undertones are very subtle and warm, akin to white rice. Our Ivory reads as crisp and clean, especially with a quick press of the iron. Slightly transparent, we prefer tops and dresses in Ivory.

Clyde Work Short Highlights

1. Our signature topstitching on vertical seams provide structure, durability, and a streamlined look. Underneath that topstitching is a strong, multithread chain stitch. We’ve topstitched the front and back crotch seams for durability and sleek, flat seams.

2. The lack of side seams boosts comfort and long-leg vibes. Classic, extra-roomy, crescent-shaped pockets that span the side panel for endless pocketing of important things.

3. The high rise offers comfort and relaxed compression. Easy-going in the waist and hip for maximum movement.

4. A sturdy elastic waistband complete with three rows of topstitching for durability, roll prevention, and a sporty look.

5. The generous inseam makes them practical and wearable, ending in a mid-thigh hem.
