Quilted Clyde Outerwear: Make a Textured Layer

Live, virtual, four-week sewing workshop!

€173,95

In this workshop you'll learn how to sew a quilted outerwear piece using the Clyde pattern—includes the vest, jacket, or trench options!

We'll cover the full process of creating a quilted garment from scratch before constructing your chosen Clyde style: layering your fabric with batting, quilting it by machine, and then using that beautifully textured material to sew a finished, wearable outerwear piece.

You'll learn how to handle the extra bulk that comes with quilted construction, how to finish seams and edges cleanly, and how handle hems and finishes on thick materials.

*Please Note: I will be using a machine to quilt my fabric in this workshop, but you are welcome to quilt by hand if you prefer. It’s a much more-time consuming process, but the results are lovely! Just be aware that the actual quilting process is not the focus of this workshop.

We'll-figure-it-out-together-guarantee

Quilted Clyde Outerwear: Make a Textured Layer

Tell me about this workshop!

I will also go over an alternative method of using a sourced quilt or pre-quilted fabric to construct your garment if you want to skip the quilting process!

This workshop is a great option if you want to make a statement layer that's truly one-of-a-kind. Quilted outerwear is having a moment—and making your own means you get to choose exactly the fabrics, colors, and quilting pattern that reflects your style.

*Please Note: I will be using a machine to quilt my fabric in this workshop, but you are welcome to quilt by hand if you prefer. It’s a much more-time consuming process, but the results are lovely! Just be aware that the actual quilting process is not the focus of this workshop.

How do live virtual workshops work?

This is a live, 4-week workshop hosted virtually. You'll get access to our workshop platform which has a community forum, other resources and guides, and the live video classes (it functions just like a Zoom call) along with the recordings after each class.

I teach the entire project live and you are able to ask questions and interact in real-time. The recorded classes are then available to you for life to re-watch at your convenience.

What's included?

  • Core Pattern & Resources
    • Clyde Outerwear digital pattern: includes vest, jacket, and trench versions—choose the style that excites you most
    • Supply & fabric guide: curated recommendations for fabric, batting, notions, and machine setup to ensure success
    • Option to purchase printed pattern: students will have the option to purchase a printed copy of the pattern before the workshop starts if you choose
  • Live Classes
    • Four x 2 hour live classes: real-time instruction, step-by-step video demos, and the opportunity to ask all your questions
    • Office Hours access: for the months of November and December you'll be able to join weekly Office Hours calls for additional live support and help
  • Community & Support
    • Private community access: live workshops are hosted in our private Skool group, where you're also able to ask questions and get live feedback and support from Liz and other students
    • Lifetime membership: you are able to remain in this group for life for continued support and guidance

What tools/equipment do I need to have?

  • A sewing machine in good working order capable of a straight stitch and ideally a zig-zag stitch
  • A walking foot (highly recommended for quilting through multiple layers)
  • At least two new, sharp machine needles appropriate for your fabric (a Universal 90/14 or denim needle works well for heavier layers)
  • Fabric shears
  • Pins and/or pattern weights
  • Seam ripper (mistakes are part of the process!)
  • Iron and ironing board

What other supplies will I need?

  • 3–5 yards of outer fabric (lightweight wovens are ideal)
  • 3–5 yards of lightweight cotton quilt batting
  • 3-5 yards of lining fabric (a smooth, lightweight woven is ideal)
  • *I’ll have recommendations for all materials if you need help selecting anything, and yardage will depend on the style you choose
  • All-purpose polyester thread. I recommend Gutermann Mara 100 for almost all projects, and it's the thread we've manufactured with for years
  • Clear gridded ruler with 1/8" markings
  • Quilting ruler or long straight ruler for marking quilting lines
  • Tailors chalk or fabric marking pen
  • Safety pins or basting spray for layering your quilt sandwich
  • Pattern paper or tracing paper
  • Pencil/pens
  • Printed copy of the Clyde Outerwear Pattern (the digital pattern is included with the workshop, you can print at home or order a full-size printed copy prior to the workshop)

What happens next?

Immediately after you check-out, you'll receive an email with an invitation to our private Skool group. This will let you access our community platform, and this is where the workshop classes will be hosted when they occur.

Once you're logged in, you'll find a brief video that walks you through the platform, and then you can start exploring right away.

You'll get an email from me as the workshop date approaches with more information about downloading your pattern files and starting to gather your tools and supplies!

Ready to make a cozy, one-of-a-kind layer you'll wear for years to come? Let's do it.

I have taken classes with several other talented sewing teachers-you are, by far, the most generous! Also, you have a garment production perspective that is different from other teachers and very helpful.

The classes I've watched so far are so rich in little tips I haven't heard elsewhere, and I've been garment sewing for 19 years! Those kinds of things are pure gold, and that's why your clothing can be so simple yet it lays so well.

This class has been amazing and we are only half way through! I have more confidence to create and sew—all from your unique and gifted way of teaching. Thank you Liz!

You are such a good instructor. Everything is laid back... I realize we are not making fitted blouses with plackets, etc..but you make it seem so accessible. Really good job!

Thank you so much for the class and the recordings! You are a wonderful teacher and so very generous with your time and talent!

Thank you so much for this, Liz! I really enjoyed last night's class. You have a real talent for teaching. The care you take is palpable.

How our workshops

actually work

All workshops are hosted live over video call on our private learning platform (the calls function just like Zoom video calls).

You'll be invited to our private learning platform where you'll find links to all the video calls, additional resources and tutorials, recordings of live classes as they're uploaded, and a community forum for asking questions and connecting with me and other students.

Each workshop includes a prep info where we'll review fabric and size selection in advance so you're ready before we dive in.

Regular our live classes, I will walk through every step, completing the project with you while providing lots of context, tips, and alternative options.

You can follow along and work on your garment in real time, or just watch and ask questions during class and work through the steps with the recording afterwards.

Office hours are Monday evenings each week, hosted live in Skool for one hour. This is a great time to work on fine-tuning your fit and pattern adjustments or troubleshoot anything that comes up between classes. These are casual and optional!

Recordings of all live sessions will be sent the following day in case you aren't able to join us or would like to rewatch.

Seats are limited for all workshops to ensure adequate time for questions and personal guidance.

Sewing your own clothing is truly transformational.

You will find so much connection with your body and personal style, and you will feel immense pride when you can wear something you made with your own two hands. And trust me, you are so capable! My approach to sewing is relaxed and open-minded. There is no mistake we can't fix, and there are many ways to create a wonderful garment. We'll find what works for you and make it FUN!

Hi! I'm Liz.

When I started Elizabeth Suzann 11 years ago, I was limited to a straight stitch sewing machine, serger, and my self-taught sewing skills (the same tools most home-sewists have access to), which makes our styles *so* well suited for DIY.

After sewing many of our customers orders myself, creating over 1000 development and photoshoot samples, and drafting and grading all of our patterns, I have tons of tricks up my sleeve to make sewing easy and efficient. And I've made plenty of mistakes that I can help you avoid! I can't wait to sew with you.

We'll-figure-it-out-together-guarantee

My goal with our live workshops is to make sure you leave with the skills and confidence to keep sewing with joy. If there is a technique, pattern or fit issue that's challenging you, we'll figure it out together even if it takes some extra time. I've got you!
