The cotton canvas washes well. I order a size up as I was concerned about getting them over my hips without a zip or fly. The structural feel and look of the canvas gives it that intentional oversized look, rather then just being too big and unflattering.
I’ve already ordered in linen, but a size down. That’s what I love about ES - the size you choose as well as the fabric can really change the look.
I am typically a 4–6 in most brands, and I have ES's canvas Clyde Pants in size 6, the canvas Florence Pants in size M and the silk Andy Trousers in size M. I ordered the canvas Andy Trousers in a M as well, and I love the fit. They do take a bit of shimmying to get over my hips (my hip measurement is about 39.5"), but it only takes a few seconds, and once they're on they feel great. I am fairly pear-shaped and wasn't sure if the pleats would be unflattering on me, but I love them! The look of these pants is very different in silk and canvas. I actually prefer the canvas version because the pleats are more visible, which emphasizes the menswear association (in the silk version, the pleats just contribute to the flowy look of the pants).
The only annoying thing about these pants is that (as many other people have mentioned) the navy canvas picks up a ton of lint and makes splatter from wet sidewalks very visible. Neither of these is a huge issue, because they're easily fixed by lint-rolling and spot-cleaning the hems with a damp cloth at the end of the day. Overall, these pants are amazing and I'm so glad to own them!
The only tiny thing I wish was different is I would like slightly less room around the hips. I have some difficulty getting the waistband past my butt, but if I sized up I would have way too much room around my hips. But that's a constant sizing struggle for me. Other than that, they're amazing pants and I can't wait to get them in other fabrics!
I did order up a size after reading the reviews. I typically wear a large and ordered an XL. I probably could have gotten away with a large but I didn't want to risk it. I would say the only thing that could make these better would be pockets. However, I'm willing to forgo the pockets for these comfy pants. I am now hooked and have my eyes on other pieces.
i see a lot of comments about lack of pockets, but imo pocketed trousers always contribute to that dreaded pooch, and while pleats do a bit of that inevitably, these don't make me feel like a sphere. love the length too, as a short person! i'm 5'0 and these come up just above the ankle.
i also have the linen version, which is much easier to get on in general, but i like the way these wear and i'm looking forward to them softening up. i wear the same size in the linen, although it's possible i could size down too. buy the pants based off your hip-to-waist measurement, it's the most important.
For reference, I wear a 6-S in the Clyde cotton canvas and a 4-S in the Clyde linen and found the M-S in the Andys to be perfect.
