  • Description

Named after Japanese-American sculptor Ruth Asawa, this tie belt draws inspiration from elements of the traditional obi, but also brings in elements of traditional menswear and art deco wraps and sashes. Asawa's work suggests the infinite curvature of the human form, transformation of shape, and manipulation of volume—all of which resonate deeply with our intention of adding belts to the Signature Collection. Use this piece to metamorphose our most oversized, fluid garments into new and transformative shapes. Subtle curves or dramatic cinching add endless options to your wardrobe. Widest at the center, this belt tapers gently towards the ends. Wrap it around your waist twice, knotting or tying it into a bow in the front or off to the side for a more asymmetrical look. Or go a different direction, and wear it like a cummerbund knotted in the back with romantic, trailing ends. It's a statement piece that feels immediately secure and substantial on the body. And after a gloriously indulgent meal, all you have to do is loosen the knot a bit—no need to feel restricted.

My favorite way to wear this is in monochromatic outfits with a matching jacket or dress, but contrast is also eye-catching. Use it to close open-front jackets or to completely transform the look of our boxier styles like the Georgia or Harper.

  • Material & Care

    Fabric: Midweight Linen

    Fiber Content: 100% Linen

Description: Medium weight, sturdy broadcloth linen that can be pressed to a neat, crisp finish or left wrinkled after washing for a perfectly lived-in look. Linen possesses natural strength and durability, and it's a super friendly fiber on the environment. It requires very little processing and is virtually lint-free, hypoallergenic, comfortable in all seasons, insulating, and absorbent.

Care: Machine washable. Wash on gentle cycle with cold water. Tumble dry warm. Leave unpressed for a beautifully rumpled look (as pictured here), or press on medium heat with steam to remove wrinkles.

*Linen is a natural fiber and will fade and wear over time, which we love. If you prefer your garments to not show as much wear, then hand wash and do not tumble dry.

It’s love 🙌🏼

This belt is extremely versatile, and I love it! I’m a 24 and got the largest size. Not as much room to do fun ties with it, but it wraps around twice with room to tie. My only complaint is it shifts quite a lot. I think with a wide belt it just is what it is 🤷🏻‍♀️

Versatile and beautiful

I ordered the Terra OS. I've worn it with black, ivory , white and expect to wear it with more Terra and navy.. it adds shape and interest while still allowing me to breathe in a way a more narrow belt would not on my body. I feel classy when I wear it.

The one true belt

I never saw the point in belts until this one. I wear it several times a week. It elevates my shift dresses from "matronly PJs" to "art gallery curator".

Love it!

I opted for the minus even though the sizing didn’t indicate that and I’m really happy with the length—not too short at all (I like to wear it tight) and plenty of length to give some pizazz to my outfit. Love the black. The lighter color could be great for warm weather climates. So happy I went for it!

Love it

Love this, works superbly with my Josephine vented tunic (no longer made). Sturdy enough that it doesn’t deform or soften with daily wear or for long Periods. Not to purchase in all the colours...

Instant class

Bought this in flax and black and love both. Adds interest and definition to an outfit. I’ve paired them with dresses and pant/top combos, they can make pants instantly high-waisted. Sometimes the light flax color is a lot of attention toward the middle, but it’s easy to just fold the widest part down a couple inches to make the belt narrower. Folding down a touch also lets you turn this belt around so the ties go in the back if you want a flatter look in front.

Such a cool, unique belt!

Love this belt, I got mine in navy. My current favourite way of styling an outfit with it is by tucking a navy silk Georgia tee in the Cecilias or silk Andys and hide the waistband with the belt, then finish off with an off-white patent heel and a nude clutch.

My favourite functional design detail of the belt is the size tag which is stitched on the centre of the belt. Makes it easy to wrap it around so you get equal amounts of the ends on both sides.

Just What I Needed

Just as I was challenging myself to make more of my wardrobe, this belt came along to assist with the process. It makes my Midis "more" and my Flos step it up a notch. Just before the release of the belts, I traded my Parabola dress for a jumpsuit and had a moment of regret. I had never been able to style the Parabola in anyway that didn't make me look like a sad nun. But the Asawa belt with the Mara Jumpsuit is a dream of a combo and I haven't looked back. I am planning my next few purchases around belts. Thanks for a world of new options.

Transformer

Once you notice this belt you can't stop looking at it: its structure is so riveting and beautiful and thank you ES for making it! I've worn and loved the olive Asawa with an ivory Clyde trench, a navy Georgia dress, and a full-on black ensemble of ES x AC Louise with Clyde culottes. (I also like it with Ace and Jig pieces, as an alternative to the matching-textile belts they supply. It makes them more chic, I think!) More fundamentally I just think it's really cool that this piece helps me rethink the clothes I already have.
