  • Description

A short based on one of our most popular, practical pant styles - the Clyde. I am decidedly not a shorts person - but dressing comfortably for warm climates almost always requires some kind of alternative to pants, and I wanted to tackle the challenge.

The silhouette I'm most drawn to is that of the 1930s and 1940s tap shorts with a narrow waist and wide, full thigh opening. I aimed to follow the rule of thirds, with the distance from natural waist to hem of the shorts taking up about one-third of total leg length. The hem hits right around mid-thigh, which feels comfortable in terms of coverage but still keeps most of your legs out in the open air. A generous inseam makes them practical and wearable (everybody knows that a one or two-inch inseam on shorts is a recipe for discomfort).

These are incredibly versatile with our classic Clyde pockets and durable topstitching. Distinctly utilitarian in feel, I picture these being right at home on an archaeological dig but also very wearable for a weekend brunch and trip to the park.

  • Material & Care

    Fabric: Midweight Linen

    Fiber Content: 100% Linen

Description: Medium weight, sturdy broadcloth linen that can be pressed to a neat, crisp finish or left wrinkled after washing for a perfectly lived-in look. Linen possesses natural strength and durability, and it's a super friendly fiber on the environment. It requires very little processing and is virtually lint-free, hypoallergenic, comfortable in all seasons, insulating, and absorbent.

Care: Machine washable. Wash on gentle cycle with cold water. Tumble dry warm. Leave unpressed for a beautifully rumpled look (as pictured here), or press on medium heat with steam to remove wrinkles.

*Linen is a natural fiber and will fade and wear over time, which we love. If you prefer your garments to not show as much wear, hand wash, and do not tumble dry.

*Garment measurements were taken flat, so double where necessary. All measurements are approximate, +/- a tolerance that is to be expected with handmade clothing.

Select your size with your hip measurement in mind as you want to make sure you'll be able to pull them up. On some bodies, you'll need to shimmy a bit to get them over your hips, but once they are on, they should feel great!

Amazing shorts with pockets

I love the Clyde shorts in linen and have them in two colors (navy and ivory). I am in between a 2 and 4 on the ES size chart (Waist: 26.5" Hips: 37") and found the size 2 to be a perfect fit! The size 4 definitely would have been too big. Even though I am short, I found the inseam length to be very flattering and appropriate for someone nearing 30... The ivory color is somewhat sheer but totally wearable with nude undergarments. I highly recommend these if you want a casual-to-dressy short with pockets.

Love, love these shorts

I bought the black Clyde linen shorts in summer of 2018 and the olive ones this year (2019). It took a couple tries to get the black shorts to fit when I first ordered. I have a 27.5-28.5 inch waist and 37.5-38 inch hips, which is between a 4 and 6 on the chart, but needed to go down to a 2 to not have them overwhelm me. They’re still a bit billowy, and I wasn’t 100% sure about them at first, but I grew to LOVE them. I ordered the olive shorts in the same size, and they’re either cut a bit slimmer or the olive just shrinks a bit more on that first in-factory wash, but I love them, too! They’re sleeker, but I can still get them on and off without a real shimmy, and they do loosen up a bit with wear. It’s not enough smaller that I wanted to exchange them for a size up, and I just ordered the rust in the same size, so you can see...I LOVE THESE SHORTS. :)

Real talk: I’m in my 40s, and with the perimenopausal hormone shifts and surges, my shape/size has been shifting, I bloat in places I’ve never bloated, and these shorts handle that beautifully. Clothes haven’t been the most comfortable thing lately, so it’s been a relief and a blessing to find something that is comfortable at multiple weights, looks sharp, I feel cute in, and is equally great at a nice brunch or for sweaty dog-walking.

I live in the southeastern US, and summers are quite hot and humid. I haven't worn shorts in years, as I've been self-conscious of my legs. I decided to buy these shorts so I can be more comfortable in the summer heat. The reviews of others were spot on! I love the fit, fabric, and the giant pockets. It's hard to believe that I'm happy in shorts again. These shorts are game changers.

Perfect for postpartum life

I purchased these shorts in preparation for a postpartum body during summer in Australia. They have served me on so many levels - something beautiful to look forward to wearing, something practical to wear for a messy baby feeding life AND the shape is super flattering over a soft stomach and holds everything in (while providing great tummy coverage for discreet feeding). Thank you for making such an amazing item!

I bought these for my daughter for Christmas and she LOVED them. Luckily I ordered them early enough so they arrived in time.

My fave shorts!

The Clyde shorts in linen are perfection! So versatile and comfortable. I love everything with Clyde pockets so these fit seamlessly into my wardrobe! (I sized down in these since linen stretches out)

good but snug!

very sturdy and think will wear well. after consulting with the team, reco'd I buy the 14 rather and 16 and after a lot of wriggling i did finally pull them up. the cotton seems to give somewhat, so think they will be good overtime but was a bit stressed. could be i'm on the line between one size is quite big and the other is a bit small.

Love the flax linen!

I love these shorts! And the linen is so easy to dress up or down. I had a few bridal and baby showers this summer and found myself pulling these for almost every event. The images provided describe the fit really well, I absolutely love these.

I Love Clyde!

This makes my third pair of Clydes (have another pair of shorts and a pair of pants). These shorts are well made from beautiful fabric: they are comfy, flattering, and versatile. If you prefer a fitted look/feel, these might not be the best choice for you, but for me the style and fit is spot on, and I’ll be wearing these for years to come.

love these shorts! they are so flowy but look great. i love how high they come up but don’t look bad. the linen makes them thin and not bulky but they aren’t transparent.
