A short based on one of our most popular, practical pant styles - the Clyde. I am decidedly not a shorts person - I don't like showing skin, and short lengths on anything usually make me uncomfortable. But dressing comfortably for warm climates almost always requires some kind of alternative to pants, and I wanted to tackle the challenge.

The silhouette I'm most drawn is that of the 1930s and 1940s tap shorts, with a slim waist and wide, full thigh opening. To create the most flattering division of leg, I aimed to follow the rule of thirds, with the distance from natural waist to hem of the shorts taking up about one-third of total leg length. This also puts the hem of the shorts on the part of the thigh that has just begun to taper in circumference, which slims the leg visually. Those factors combined with the wide, full silhouette create a beautiful shape that still feels modest and elegant. A generous inseam makes them practical and wearable (everybody knows that a one or two-inch inseam on shorts is a recipe for discomfort).

These are incredibly versatile with our classic Clyde pockets and durable topstitching. Distinctly utilitarian in feel, I picture these being right at home on an archaeological dig. But also very wearable for a weekend brunch and trip to the park.

Cut from a sturdy, incredibly durable linen that can be pressed to a neat, crisp finish, or left wrinkled after washing for a perfectly lived-in look. It will only soften and improve with age, a beautiful benefit of clothing meant for a life fully-lived.

    Midweight Linen

    100% Linen

This is a medium weight, sturdy, structured, incredibly durable broadcloth linen that can be pressed to a neat, crisp finish, or left wrinkled after washing for a perfectly lived-in look. It has luxurious body and weight, and the strength to stand up to years of daily wear. It will only soften and improve with age, starting out with a coarser finish but with the ability to become more supple and flexible with wear. We love linen because of the natural strength and durability the fiber possesses, and because it is a very friendly fiber on the environment. It requires very little processing, is virtually lint-free, hypoallergenic, extremely comfortable in all seasons, insulating, and absorbent. It is also one of my favorite fabrics aesthetically - possessing such charm and texture in its variation, with a natural sheen that doesn't feel at all pretentious.

Available in four classic colors - a warm "Ivory," a natural "Flax," a rich "Navy," and a deep "Black."

Hand or machine wash on gentle cycle with cold water. Tumble dry low. Leave unpressed for a beautifully rumpled look (as pictured here), or press on medium heat with steam to remove wrinkles, straighten neckline, sleeves, and hem. Will press to a crisp, smooth finish.

  • Sizing & Fit

Available in sizes 00-16. See our size chart to determine your size.

Intended to have a comfortable, relaxed fit through the waist and hip and a roomy cut through the thigh. Wider at the thigh than our full-length Clyde Work Pant, but the waist and hip will fit the same as the pant. Elastic waist allows for wiggle room between sizes - choose your size based on how slim/relaxed you'd like the hips and thigh to fit. Size down for a fitted look, size up for a roomier, relaxed fit. Modest but sporty mid-thigh length.

A shorts version of our Clyde Work Pant. Waist and hips should fit identically to our current Clyde pattern, however, the thigh opening is much roomier to create a better silhouette (the thin Clyde thigh would have been a bit too Bermuda-short-ish). You should be able to safely order your preferred Clyde size for the same fit in waist/hip. Consider that the linen is softer and stretchier than cotton!
