Detailed, fully illustrated instructions

The skirt that’s so simple it is brilliant. I sometimes find skirts too fussy for my taste, so I created the most pared-down version of this garment–nothing less and nothing more than exactly what was needed. It has enough length to show some leg but also provides modest coverage, a generous hem to add luxe weight and body to the fabric, and just enough gathering to add fullness and movement at the hip but not become bulky at the waist.

Deep, sleek inseam pockets provide plenty of room for storing odds and ends along with a place to keep your hands occupied (we all know how useful pockets are for those of us that need somewhere to put our hands!). This pattern includes our production method for inserting pockets–it can be a bit of a mind-bender, but once you've done it you'll have the cleanest, professional finished pocket and you will feel so proud!

Fabric, Tools, & Notions

Light- to medium-weight fabrics with no stretch will work exceptionally well. Linen, cotton voile, silk crepe, seersucker, tencel, rayon-pretty much anything with some drape will work for this pattern. Lighter weight fabrics will add more drape, and heavier fabrics will result in a more structured garment. You can even try this in a wool or wool blend for a wintry option.

You'll need:

- Fabric of choice — see detailed fabric requirements here.

- 2” (5 cm) wide waistband elastic

- Needle

- All-purpose polyester thread

- Sewing machine (capable of a straight stitch)

- Scissors

Techniques

Beginner difficulty. Suitable for sewers of all levels, especially if sewn without the inseam pockets. Patient beginners and intermediate sewists will be well-suited for the pocket construction.

This pattern requires sewing inseam pockets and inserting elastic waistband. This pattern has two pattern pieces in total, and can be completed in about four hours, including cutting time.

Beautiful skirt!

Finally writing my review, as I’ve had my pattern pieces cut for months and just got around to sewing it today. This is my first make of a skirt and I was a little intimidated by the pocket instructions, but they were so thoroughly explained that taking it step by step worked out perfectly. This skirt is going to be a staple in my wardrobe.

Lovely skirt; easy to follow instructions

This is my first time seeing a skirt and I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the pattern was to follow. I love the pockets and how the elastic can be serged to the fabric. I made this skirt using a ripped linen bedsheet so intended for it to just be a “trial run,” but I ended up loving it so much that I wore it out for 2 days straight. I’m looking forward to making another linen and a washable silk version!

Beautiful shape and instructions!

It's such a great pattern! Perfect shape. Feels swishy but also clean and contemporary. I made it in the ES line gauze and it's such a soft and breathable garment. I didn't add the pockets as I don't generally include them in skirts, I feel they add too much bulk at the hips – I appreciated that the instructions give you the option of skipping straight to the step after the pockets. I also made a waistband casing for the elastic as I don't find sewing the elastic to the fabric while stretching it out very fun, it's also impossible to change or amend the elastic if it's too tight or loose. Will be making more Bel skirts for sure, it's the design that drew me to ES in the first place and I was so happy when they released the pattern.

Great skirt pattern

I loved the finished skirt and can’t wait to make more in different fabrics for every occasion. The waistband insertion was frustrating with trying to topstitch it down. It gave neat finish in the end but I probably would have preferred the casing method.
