Pattern Details

The essential, classic, forever pant. Its deep, open pockets are cut a little wider than the pant leg giving plenty of room to hold a myriad of important things like your cell phone, car keys, pens, snacks, small animals...

In a soft linen, these feel seasonless and relaxed. In a heavier canvas or wool, they are indestructible. Pair with a cashmere sweater and sneakers and wear for an entire weekend trip to the mountains, or wear them cuffed in the summer with a silk tank. Or, do what I do, and wear them all the time as very stylish pajamas that allow you to go from your couch to the real world without changing a thing.

The Clyde Work Pant is a great all-purpose pant with large, crescent-shaped pockets spanning the side of the pant leg. Unique, three-panel design results in vertical seams along the center front and back of each leg in addition to the inseam, allowing for limitless fit adjustments and style changes. Use this classic, building-block pant as a jumping-off point for a variety of wardrobe staples that will serve you well for years.

Difficulty Level

Intermediate difficulty. Suitable for patient beginners. This pattern requires understitching, topstitching, facings, and the insertion of an elastic waistband. Choose from US Sizes 000-28 and three length options with varying rise and inseam measurements.

This pattern has 10 pattern pieces in total, and can be completed in about three hours including cutting time.

Recommended Fabrics and Required Materials

Medium-weight fabrics with no stretch. Linen, cotton, hemp, in plainweaves or canvas will work well. Lighter weight fabrics will add more drape, and heavier fabrics will result in a more structured garment. Ensure that whatever material you choose can hold up in the pocket area.

You'll need:
-Fabric of your choice--see detailed fabric requirements here
-2” (5 cm) wide elastic cut to length for your waist
-All purpose polyester thread
-Sewing machine (capable of a straight stitch)
-Needle

Awesome pants that will become a wardrobe staple!

I love these pants! They are a breeze to assemble and my wearable toile is already out and about.

I took in the pockets a bit, lengthened the leg by about 4cm and took some fabric out of the tummy area for my next pair but these pants are a summer dream come true!

Absolute wardrobe staple and can be dressed up or down easily - I wear these to work, to go out and just about everywhere else.

    Sizing seemed a bit off

I was partially in between two sizes, so I sized up. However, it was HUGE. I'm considering ripping the seams, recutting, and resewing the entire garment.

I also wish that all sizes were printed on the same PDF. I would have cut in between as 12 and 14 (12 waist, 14 leg), but since they're on different documents, I didn't have the option to do that.

    Brilliant.

Another brilliant ES pattern! Easy to follow instructions. Interesting design. Amazingly functional (those pockets!) Comfortable. And they fit MY body. On my next pair I would consider adding to the rise on the back. Rise on the front is great (perfect for me). I like the fact that there are numerous points at which to alter (3-panel design). I may make more changes but first I need to wear and enjoy them for a few weeks/months.

    A real pleasure

I have been sewing for myself for nearly 50 years and have seldom had such a successful project outcome! I cut a size 8 short (based on hip measurement, as recommended) in mid-weight linen and made no pattern alterations since I was treating this as my toile. To my utter amazement, these pants fit me exactly as pictured and hoped for, despite my petite size and height. I will be making these pants a lot, as well as making them in different fabrics. I was also impressed with the precise instructions and learned a nifty new way to construct an elastic waistband. You have hooked a new loyal customer. Please make more of your styles available as digital patterns!

    Very handsome

I love these pants, very handsome with the crescent shaped pockets. Also love the tall option, makes the fit so comfortable in the rise and the length for me at 178cm. I was very proud of myself sewing such a multi panel design, but the instructions made it so easy to follow. My first pants ever!

I am however eagerly awaiting the revision to address the cut being too tight in the calf. I made the size to fit my measurements (in olive green) and loved them but they started splitting at the seams in the calf when I sat on the floor. Looked great standing but not practical for me to restrict movement like this so I made some adjustments and gave them to my mum who prefers not to sit on the floor anyway. Guess it could still work as a dress pant? I have a friend who wears them when she’s working at her standing desk but not for sitting all day or bike commute.

Next I made the size up (in blue) and I think they unfortunately look too baggy. If I was a more skilled sewer I guess I could work out the solution in the middle. But I wait the re-draft patiently and look forward to making LOTS of pairs in the future!
