The essential, classic, forever pant. Its deep, open pockets are cut a little wider than the pant leg giving plenty of room to hold a myriad of important things like your cell phone, car keys, pens, snacks, small animals...

In a soft linen, these feel seasonless and relaxed. In a heavier canvas or wool, they are indestructible. The Clyde Work Pant is a great all-purpose pant with large, crescent-shaped pockets spanning the side of the pant leg. Unique, three-panel design results in vertical seams along the center front and back of each leg in addition to the inseam, allowing for limitless fit adjustments and style changes. Use this classic, building-block pant pattern as a jumping-off point for a variety of wardrobe staples that will serve you well for years.

Fabric, Tools, & Notions

We recommend medium-weight fabrics with no stretch. Linen, cotton, hemp, in plainweaves or canvas will work well. Lighter weight fabrics will add more drape, and heavier fabrics will result in a more structured garment. Ensure that whatever material you choose can hold up in the pocket area.

You'll need:

-Fabric of your choice--see detailed fabric requirements here.

-2” (5 cm) wide elastic cut to length for your waist

-All purpose polyester thread

-Sewing machine (capable of a straight stitch)

-Needle

Techniques

Intermediate difficulty. Suitable for patient beginners. This pattern requires understitching, topstitching, facings, and the insertion of an elastic waistband. Choose from US Sizes 000-28 and three length options with varying rise and inseam measurements.

Simple to sew; looks exactly like what it was advertised to be; love the finished product on the inside (very neat and professional looking) and the outside; comfortable.

Well written pattern instructions.

Made them in a purple linen. They look amazing.
The waistband was a pain.
The pattern instructions are easy to follow. Particularly enjoyed the reflective section at the end, with the encouragement to learn mending tequniques as they inevitably break with use.

Nice trousers but make a toile as the liklihood is you will need to make changes

I liked the look of these trousers and thought they would be a great make especially for my body shape. Overall I am happy. As an advanced beginner, it was a straight forward make, the only issue was the elastic waistband. I normally prefer a casing and think I will do this for my next pair. I felt I needed another pair of hands to do as they instructed. I made the regular size based on my height and they did turn out too short for me by probably at least 1.5". To be fair though I am 5'8" tall so on the cusp of the regular BUT am long bodied. I really don't like how the pocket flares out on the hip area so would cut the pocket facing so it is not as wide (it is wider than the pocket bag) for my next make. The lack of notches is very disappointing and those that are on the pattern do not match, apart from the hem notch. I do believe with the changes mentioned and marking some notches on the pattern my next make will be perfect. What to take from this review, make a toile. My make was designed to be a wearable toile and it is wearable

Too constricting to move in

I was really hoping to make work pants out of these, I had planned to make a couple of canvas pairs for gardening and home repair work, and some linen pairs for lighter work, but they don't really live up to their name. I can't even bend my knees 90 degrees in these, they are so tight and unyielding, and I have quite slim legs compared to my hip measurement which I sized up for. The edges of the pockets stand away from the body and look roomy, but there's actually very little room within the pockets, they don't hold much, I can barely put both my hands in the pockets at the same time. The pattern itself is very strange, it has almost no notches, when easing together curved leg seams there is no way to tell if you're easing at the correct rate, no way to tell at a glance what your seam allowances are, and no way to tell back from front, I had to go back and fold pattern pieces to make sure they were symmetrical and the back and front were irrelevant. These will need a lot of alterations to make them practical for anything, I'm not sure if I can be bothered to make a better version of these.

We appreciate you sharing your experience with us! We believe the beauty of sewing is that you can alter a garment to fit you exactly how you would like. We also welcome questions and feedback regarding our digital sewing patterns via our support inbox at support@elizabethsuzann.com. Thank you!

Comfortable and stylish

Beautiful and functional design. I LOVE these pants so much! Working in a medical setting and being a mom, Clyde pants are the best. They are comfortable, large pockets, and stylish. Now my little boy wants a pair, too to put all his little cars and Legos. Thank you for sharing your patterns. I'm currently saving up for some of your handmade clothings, especially silk 💛
